The classic book Getting to Yes introduced the idea of your BATNA or Best Alternative To a Negotiated Agreement.  Your WATNA is the Worst Alternative To a Negotiated Agreement. Understanding these can help you weigh how flexible you are in attempting to reach an agreement.
